Bibliography Turkey:
English Resources: Samin (1987) is a classical article on the trajectory of Turkish left and leftist organizations between 1960 and 1980. It is only a good introduction for the history of Turkish left, but also valuable for its critical perspective. Landau (1974) provides a summary of the idelogies and brief histories of the extreme leftist and rightist organizations in 1960s. Rifat (2006) offers a collection of reports of US Ambassy in Turkey, full of valuable data and information about student politics of Turkey. Roos (1969), an article mainly based on serveys conducted among university students in the 1960s, is helpful in understanding the values and political tendencies of general student body. Szyliowicz (1972) is the only English resource focused solely on student poltics in Turkey; it, however, not satisfactory neither on the theoretical nor factual level, although the chapters on the student politics before 1960 are valuable since this is an understudied subject in Turkey.
Turkish Resources: The Encyclopedia of Socialism and Social Struggles (1987) offers a rich chronological account of student activism and social movements in general with short essays by leftist intellectuals and political leaders. Baykam (1998) offers interviews with significant student leaders of the period and information of daily experiences of militants although the questions of the interviewer are often manipulative. Feyizoğlu (1989) is a collection of newspaper coverage of the period related to student politics which provides rich historical material. Genç (1971) is a journalist’s account of student events and clashes, and also a polemic written from a social democratic perspective by a former social democrat student leader. Karadeniz (1975) is a valuable interpretation of student events written by a student leader of the period. The work of Kışlalı (1974) is built on a survey made among university students in 1969. It is informative in terms of sociological aspects, although the survey is not fully reliable. Zileli (2000, 2002) offers an autobiography full of rich anectodes and valuable material written by a former militant activist which includes very sophisticated observations.
