1968 - A Chronology of Protest in Europe
by Rolf Werenskjold

How to use this section:
Here you will find detailed chronologies of events surrounding '1968' in various European countries. You can search them with the help of the navigational menu on the left.
The chronologies are based on several different sources: Especially helpful have been Caute (1988), Ali & Watkins (1998) and Hobsbawm, Weitzmann, & Magnum Photos (1998). For media comments on protest events, Keesing’s Record of World Events (formerly Keesing’s Contemporary Archives). Newspapers like the New York Times, The Times, Aftenposten, Arbeiderbladet, and Dagbladet have also been searched for dates and events. From the Norwegian television news, NRK Dagsrevyen, the transmission logs for 1968 have also been drawn upon.
I also gratefully acknowledge the support of many colleagues in putting together these chronologies. In particular, I want to thank
- Louis Vos (History Department, Catholic University of Leuven)
- Laura Kolbe (History Department, University of Helsinki)
- Ursula Stutz (German Department, University of Zurich)
Apart from the many colleagues who offered their expertise and feedback through peer review, I was fortunate to be able to draw on the assistance of
- James Godbolt, who gave me access to his unpublished chronology on the Vietnam Movement in Norway
- Boris Kanzleiter, who contributed on events in Yugoslavia
- Miguel Cardina, who was very helpful for events in Portugal.
The rich literature on 1968 has been an important source for contextualizing these chronologies. Particularly helpful were Thomas (2003), Fink, Gassert & Junker (1998) and Klimke & Scharloth (2008). For more comprehensive details on events in various countries, see the full version by Werenskjold (2008).
For language polish, my thanks also go to Nils Olav Brekke, Thea Brophy and Martin Klimke.
