January, 1963 - December, 1963 The Socialist Youth Organization (SUF) is established with Ole Kopreitan as its first leader. He later on becomes a central political figure in the fight against nuclear weapons in the 1980s.

1964

13.05.1964 Demonstration against the Davis Cup tournament in Oslo between Norway and South Africa. Anti-apartheid slogans against the segregation in South Africa.
07.08.1964 75 participate in a demonstration against the American war in Vietnam outside the U.S. embassy in Oslo. The demonstration is organized by the so-called “Freedom Committee of 1964”.
September, 1964 Club 7 is established in Oslo as a meeting place for young people searching for an alternative culture.
10.10.1964 Pax publishing house is established in Oslo. It publishes radical and alternative literature about war, peace and international politics with a politically left profile.

1965

11.03.1965 500 – 800 participate in the first large demonstration in Norway against the American war in Vietnam  outside the U.S. embassy in Oslo. The demonstration is arranged by the Student Union and supported by other political youth organizations – among them also the AUF.
26.07.1965 The painting “Report from Vietnam” by the anarchist painter Kjartan Slettemark is torn down and destroyed outside the parliament in Oslo.
13.09.1965 After having been in power for almost 20 consecutive years, the Labour Party (DNA) government led by Einar Gerhardsen resigns after defeat in the general elections. The four centre-right parties (Senterpartiet/Venstre/Kristelig Folkeparti and Høyre) form a majority coalition.
12.10.1965 Per Borten, leader of the Center Party (Senterpartiet), is appointed new Prime Minister.
15.10.1965 100 participate in a torchlight procession outside the U.S. embassy in Oslo in protest against the American war in Vietnam.
09.12.1965 The Norwegian Solidarity Committee for Vietnam is established. Members of the Labour Party make up the majority in the Committee, but are opposed to and receive no support from the party leadership.

1966

04.07.1966 The Vietnam Committee of AUF organizes a demonstration in Oslo against the American war in Vietnam.
11.10.1966 The police seizes the novel Uten en tråd by author Jens Bjørneboe on grounds of indecency.
10.12.1966 Human Rights Day. Demonstrations in Oslo and several other cities against the American war in Vietnam. The political organizations behind the Solidarity Committee for Vietnam participate. The organization “Peoples’ Movement against War” (Folkereisning Mot Krig) withdraws from the committee. The Norwegian Communist Party and their youth organization (NKU) are excluded from the event. The Solidarity Committee is actively supported by the AUF. 

1967

March, 1967 - May, 1967 After an extensive student voter mobilization, the conservative student leader Anders Sjåstad is elected leader of the student union at the University of Oslo for the fall semester 1967.
09.04.1967 The Solidarity Committee for Vietnam organizes a demonstration in Oslo against the American war in Vietnam. The demonstration ends one of many “Vietnam/Indochina Weeks” in solidarity with the FNL. The political youth organizations AUF, Young Liberals (Unge Venstre), SUF and NKU and the students union participate. Parties on the political left such as SF and NKP support the event. A united Norwegian press condemns the arrangement.
01.05.1967 The Solidarity Committee for Vietnam organizes a demonstration in Oslo against the American war in Vietnam. 5,000 people participate. The demonstration is supported by the leftist youth organizations AUF, SUF, NKU, and by the left parties of SF and NKP. Rune Gerhardsen, the son of the former social democratic prime minister Einar Gerhardsen, gives a speech and members of the Norwegian Labor Union participate in the march. The protest is not a part of the traditional May Day march, even though Vietnam is also a main issue there. Anti-war protest becomes is becoming widespread among the politically active Norwegian youth.
20.05.1967 300-400 participate in an illegal demonstration outside the U.S. embassy in Oslo against the American war in Vietnam. Finn Gustavsen and Reidar T. Larsen, leading figures in the Socialist People’s Party and the Communist Party, take part in the demonstration. The protestors are throwing stones through the embassy windows. The police arrest 15 protesters.
21.05.1967 - 23.05.1967 At the National Convention of the Labour Party (Det norske Arbeiderparti - DNA), the party passes a new manifesto on foreign policy with new radical statements about the American war in Vietnam. The party now gives its support to the FNL.
July, 1967 - August, 1967 Members of the Socialist Student Organization (Sos-Stud) travel to China to study the cultural revolution. Among the most important travelers are Pål Steigan and Tron Øgrim, who later on become central figures in the Norwegian Maoist movement of the 1970s. The Chinese embassy in Norway pays their travel expenses.
04.07.1967 Nationwide demonstrations against the American war in Vietnam. About 900 – 3,000 people participate in a demonstration in Oslo. Youth representatives from the FNL and U.S. peace activist Benjamin Spock give speeches in Oslo. FNL representatives also participate in meetings in Molde and Fredrikstad. Protest petitions against the American war in Vietnam are printed in the news­papers.
13.07.1967 The Norwegian parliament decides to apply for membership in EEC.
23.08.1967 About 100 participate in a demonstration outside the U.S. embassy in Oslo in protest against the American war in Vietnam.
24.08.1967 About 200 participate in an illegal demonstration outside the U.S. embassy in Oslo in protest against the American war in Vietnam. Clashes between protestors and police. The police arrest 20 demonstrators.
26.08.1967 A peaceful demonstration outside the U.S. embassy in Oslo in protest against the American war in Vietnam.
30.08.1967 The “Experimental High School” is established in Oslo.
September, 1967 - December, 1967 Ernest Mandel is invited to the Students’ Association in Oslo. The economist Mandel had become famous for his book about Europe’s economic policy towards Eastern Europe and Third World countries.
September, 1967 - December, 1967 The conservative student leader, George Apenes, is elected leader of the Students’ Association in Oslo for the spring semester 1968. Despite a conservative leadership, the left wing gets majority support for all resolutions they propose during the spring semester 1968.
September, 1967 - December, 1967 National convention in the Socialist Youth Party (SUF). The Maoists from Teisen (Labor district in Oslo) take control over the youth organization. Several resolutions are passed that are in conflict with the party line of the Socialist People’s Party.
04.10.1967 The Norwegian Foreign minister, John Lyng, criticizes the American bombing of North Vietnam during his speech at the U.N. in New York.
20.10.1967 - 22.10.1967 Demonstration at Blindern, the University in Oslo, as a part of the international demonstrations in protest against the American war in Vietnam after appeals from Students Mobilization Committee in USA. Meeting in the Students’ Association.
21.10.1967 40 students participate in the morning in an illegal demonstration outside the U.S. embassy in Oslo in protest against the American war in Vietnam. Clashes between protestors and police. The protestors throw smoke bombs. A 26 years old medical student is arrested and fined after throwing red paint through the embassy windows. The Solidarity Committee for Vietnam organizes a legal anti-war demonstration in the evening outside the U.S. embassy. 20 counter demonstrators wave South Vietnamese flags.
24.11.1967 The voting age in general elections is lowered to 20 years.
08.12.1967 Demonstration outside the U.S. embassy in Oslo against the American war in Vietnam. The protestors chain themselves together.
10.12.1967 Women participate in a demonstration march to the U.S. embassy and the residence of the American ambassador in protest against the American war in Vietnam. The Solidarity Committee for Vietnam arranges the demonstration.
13.12.1967 - 15.12.1967 The “Thanks yanks” exhibition is organized by KSA. The exhibition is closed after 2 days of fire bomb threats.

1968

05.01.1968 - 07.01.1968 The 9th national convention of the Norwegian Student Union passes resolutions demanding the abolition of the means-tests on student loan; deliberations on the study salary by the university reform committee (the Ottosen Committee); and support to the West German students’ struggle to participate in the reform of the German universities. They also pass resolutions in support of students in Rhodesia.
11.01.1968 The Norwegian Vietnam Movement is established.
12.01.1968 Students and the academic staff at the institute of Social Science at Oslo university pass a letter of protest to the Spanish government against the closing of the Faculty of Social Science and Economy at the University of Madrid.
26.01.1968 Court trial against a 22 years old man arrested during the demonstration outside the U.S. embassy July 4, 1967. He is accused for offending another country’s flag. The court fines him. 
29.01.1968 The organization Norway out of NATO is established.
31.01.1968 Demonstration outside the U.S. embassy in Oslo against the American war in Vietnam.
19.02.1968 Students at the institutes of Sociology and Ethnography in Oslo pass a resolution to the Spanish government in protest against the closing of Centro de Estudios e Investigacion in Madrid.
March, 1968 An anti-American meeting in the assembly hall of the University in Oslo. The meeting passes demands for a cultural boycott of the United States.
08.03.1968 26-year old medical student on trial for criminal damage to the U.S. embassy in Oslo during the illegal demonstration October 21, 1967. He is sentenced to 60 days qualified imprisonment.
12.03.1968 Rudi Dutschke gives a speech at university student meetings in Oslo and Trondheim. The meetings are arranged by the Socialist Student organization. The title of the speech is “Students and Politics”. 1,800 Norwegian students participate in the meetings.
14.03.1968 15 – 20 radical youths participate in a demonstration against the U.S. ambassador, Margaret Joy Tibbet, during a political meeting in the Conservative Party (Høyre) in Moss in protest against the American war in Vietnam. The action was lead by the SUF-leader Sigurd Allern.
16.03.1968 Members of the American Black Panthers visit Oslo.
20.03.1968 - 27.03.1968 Vietnam week in Bergen.
28.03.1968 The Norwegian parliament decides to establish new universities in Trondheim and Tromsø
02.04.1968 - 09.04.1968 Nationwide Vietnam week organized by the Norwegian Solidarity Committee for Vietnam in Oslo, Arendal, Haugesund, Stavanger, Trondheim, Røros, Elverum, Mo i Rana, Hammerfest, Vadsø, Vardø, Skien and Hemnesberget.
06.04.1968 75 participate in an illegal demonstration outside parliament. Clashes between protestors and the police. About 10 demonstrators are arrested.
09.04.1968 150-300 participate in a peaceful torchlight procession outside the U.S. embassy in Oslo in protest against the American war in Vietnam . The protestors shout slogans like: “Death to USA”; “Victory over USA”; “Blow up the embassy”; and “Close the embassy”. The protestors are comparing the American conduct in Vietnam to the Nazis. The demonstration is organized by the Solidarity Committee for Vietnam as a part of the Vietnam Week. 25 police officers and horses protect the embassy building. 30 counter demonstrators shout pro-American slogans. Some clashes occur in the aftermath of the demonstration. 1 demonstrator is injured and 14 arrested.
15.04.1968 4 members of the youth organization of the Socialist People’s Party arrested for vandalism at the residence of the Norwegian King at Skaugum. They paint swastikas and write slogans like: “Down with USA”, and “Support FNL”. They also painted slogans at a nearby church such as “Down with the state church”.  
19.04.1968 50 participate in an illegal – but peaceful - student demonstration outside the editorial office of the newspaper Adresseavisa in Trondheim in protest against the news coverage of the student revolt in West Germany. The protestors claimed that both Adresseavisa and the other newspaper in the city – Arbeider-Avisa – sided with the Springer Press. The demonstrator shout slogans like: “We support the Berlin students”; “We demand real free speech – and space in Adresseavisa”, and “Why does Adresseavisa lie about Dutschke?” A delegation meets the editor and demands the newspaper to print their proclamation and a statement from 14 German professors criticizing the Springer press monopoly. 7 demonstrators are arrested, among them several members of the Socialist People’s Party and members of the local county council. 200 bystanders watch the demonstration.
20.04.1968 Meeting in the Students' Association in Oslo. The meeting passes a resolution holding the German Government accountable for the killing of Benny Ohnesorg and the assassination attempt on Rudi Dutschke.
23.04.1968 About 40 – many of them young women - participate in an illegal demonstration in Oslo outside several institutions in the capital – among them the government, the court and the largest Norwegian newspaper Aftenposten’s editorial office. The demonstrators carry posters with slogans like: “Full support to the FNL”, “The police criminalize demonstrators”,  Crush the bourgeoisie class”, “The police support the upper-class”, and “Release political prisoners”. They distribute leaflets and demand the release of those arrested during the demonstration on April 6. The police stop the demonstration and several of the protestors are arrested.
01.05.1968 Disturbance during the May Day demonstration in Trondheim. Posters like: “Norway out of NATO, NATO out of Norway” are part of the demonstration alongside slogans against the American war in Vietnam, the junta in Greece and pro-abortion slogans. During the speech by former prime minister Einar Gerhardsen 30 youths stand up behind him on the platform with North Vietnamese flags and posters with slogans like: ”The Labour Party (Det norske Arbeiderpartiet – DNA) has betrayed socialism”. Hissing during the speech when Gerhardsen defends the Norwegian membership in NATO. The organization committee of the demonstration and the police remove the protestors. Several hundred participants in an illegal demonstration outside the county jail in Oslo in support of imprisoned demonstrators. Vietnam demonstration in Stavanger.
03.05.1968 Protest rally by the Socialist Student Association at the Frederikke square at Blindern, the University in Oslo.
05.05.1968 Illegal demonstration outside the Chinese embassy in Oslo by a group of conservative youth. The protestors throw stones at the building and against the windows. The Norwegian Government apologizes for the incident.
07.05.1968 Illegal demonstration against the Israeli foreign minister Abba Eban during a celebration of the Israeli 20 year’s anniversary of independence in the assembly hall of the University of Oslo. The protestors are unfolding posters inside the meeting hall and shout slogans comparing Eban with Hitler. Former leading figures of the Labour Party and the Labor Union (Håkon Lie, Jens Christian Hauge and Condrad Nordahl) take action to throw the demonstrators out before the police arrive. Bystanders kick some of the demonstrators. After the meeting about 400-500 gather at the University Square in Oslo. Many of them are bystanders. They carry posters with slogans as: “Israel in celebrating 20 years of aggression” and “Long live Al Fatah”. Leaflets are handed out demanding the Norwegian Government to condemn the Israeli policy. The demonstration is initiated by organizations on the political left, such as Free Forum (Fritt Forum), the Labour Party’s Youth organization in Oslo (AUF-Oslo), the Labor Union’s Student Association (Arbeiderbevegelsens Studentforbund), the Socialistic Student Association (Sosialistisk Studentforbund), the Communist Party’s Youth Organization (Kommunistisk ungdom) and the Socialistic Youth Organization (Sosialistisk Ungdomsforbund).
08.05.1968 Nationwide demonstration in several Norwegian cities against the American war in Vietnam. About 200 participate in demonstration march and rally at Youngstorget in Oslo. Former prime minister Einar Gerhardsen; editor of the Communist newspaper Friheten, Reidar T. Larsen; and Berit Ås give speeches. The demonstration in Oslo meets with a counter demonstration during the march. Demonstration in Trondheim. The journalist Per Aasen and assistant professor Kåre Gisvold give speeches.
09.05.1968 500 participate in a student demonstration in Oslo in protest against means-test on student loans. An action committee from the Student Union and the Labour Party’s Student Association hold the demonstration in conflict with the current conservative-led Student Association.
13.05.1968 A student petition campaign against rising rents on student hostels is delivered to the Student Welfare Association.
17.05.1968 Demonstration in Kristiansand against the Norwegian membership in NATO during the celebration of May 17 (National Day). The Socialist People Party arranges the demonstration. The demonstration provokes anger with the bystanders.
29.05.1968 The Norwegian parliament arranges its yearly foreign policy debate. The discussion is seen in the light of the French May events. The parliament also discusses topics like the crises in the Middle East, the Nigeria-Biafra conflict, Portugal’s policy in Africa, the Greek Junta, and the American war in Vietnam.
05.06.1968 Court trial against one of the protestors from the illegal demonstrations on April 6 outside the American embassy and the Norwegian parliament. A 20-year old man, Odd-Erik Germundsson, is accused of insults and violence against the police during the arrest. He had labeled the police “Fascist devils”, “Sadists”, “Class copper”, and “Nazi copper”. He is sentenced to 30 days imprisonment.
13.06.1968 30 youths – most of them girls - participate in a demonstration at the public gallery of the Norwegian Parliament during the debate on NATO. The Parliament is fored to interrupt the proceedings while the police clears the gallery. The demonstration in parliament comes in the aftermath of an anti-NATO rally at the nearby Market Square (Stortorget). About 200 participate in the rally. Rune Gerhardsen, the son of the former prime minister Einar Gerhardsen, MP from the Socialist People’s Party, Finn Gustavsen, and vice chairman of one of the branches in the Labor Union are among the speakers at the rally.
30.07.1968 The Norwegian SMOG committee organizes a petition campaign in Oslo in support of Alexander Dubcek. The organization is an all-party organization that supported cultural freedom in East Europe and works for the release of political prisoners.
August, 1968 The Socialist Party’s Youth Organization (SUF) organizes its summer camp at Tromøy with slogans like “Long live the proletarian cultural revolution”, “Support the FNL” and “Study the comrade Mao”.

21.08.1968 - 22.08.1968 Several demonstrations outside the Soviet embassy in Oslo during the evening and night in protest against the Soviet invasion of Czechoslovakia. The largest demonstration is an all-party demonstration exclusively against the Soviets. The demonstrators shout slogans like: “Long live Dubcek!” and “Down with Soviet!” The other rally is an illegal demonstration organized by the left radical Socialist Youth Organization (SUF). SUF holds its own demonstration because they do not want to join the same demonstration as the Conservative Party’s youth organization (Unge Høyre) and, simultaneously, want to protest the American war in Vietnam. This demonstration is met by a counterdemonstration by a group of conservative youths. The protestors turn around embassy cars in the street and attack the Soviet commerce legation and the house of the Soviet ambassador with stones. The police arrest about 5 protestors. Demonstrations in Bergen and Stavanger against the Soviet invasion of Czechoslovakia. These demonstrations are arranged by the political youth organizations. In Stavanger, rector Kjølv Egeland gives speech at the rally. A proclamation of protest against the invasion is signed by the mayor of Stavanger and by all the high school rectors in Stavanger area. In Bergen, professor Knut Kleve gives a speech at the rally.
September, 1968 The organization Red Front (Rød Front) is established. The organization is a student political alliance of student organizations on the radical political left.
September, 1968 The radical Swedish author and intellectual Jan Myrdal participates in a debate in the Students’ Association in Oslo. Myrdal labels the Social Democrats as “class traitors”.
12.09.1968 The organization Professional Student Front (Faglig Studentfront – FST) is established with financial funding from Socialistic Student Association. Its aims are to work for a comprehensive social criticism and struggle against the government’s university reform committee – the Ottosen Committee.
15.09.1968 Herbert Marcuse gives a speech at the Students’ Association in Oslo. He is later interviewed by Bjørn Nielsen in his television program about literature – Bokbadet – NRK.
29.09.1968 Demonstration at University Square in Oslo in protest against the Junta in Greece. The demonstration is a protest against the Greek referendum on the changes in the Constitution. The demonstration is arranged by the Norwegian Committee for Greek democracy, the Students’ Association, and by the Greek committee against dictatorship. The main speaker is exiled Greek author Vassilis Vasilikos. Chairman of the Norwegian Committee for Greek democracy, the labor leader Jan Halstad, give speech.
October, 1968 The Saturday Seminar at the University in Bergen. Debates about university democracy and the university reform proposals (the Ottosen Committee). Among keynote speakers: Hans Skjervheim, Steinar Stjernø og Stein Mehren.
01.10.1968 800 of 1200 students sign a letter of protest against rising of rents in the student hostel Sogn in Oslo. The students threaten to go on strike against the rent increase. 
08.10.1968 Trial in court of examination and summary jurisdiction in Oslo against three young men arrested during the demonstration April 6. These were accused of shouting insults and of violence against the police and for resisting arrest. One was released and two were sentenced to imprisonment.
16.10.1968 An official Hanoi delegation visits Oslo.
16.10.1968 Extensive demonstration inside and outside of a cinema in Oslo against the film Mal d’Africa (Skygger over Afrika) by the Italian documentary producer Antonio Climati. Climati is the same producer that made Africa Addio, the film that generated strong protest in West Germany and Sweden. The protestors demand a ban of the film. Clashes between demonstrators and police. The police makes several arrests. The action starts a long debate in the press about the film and the call for censorship by the demonstrators.
18.10.1968 The American John Gerassi, an expert on Latin America, gives a speech at the Students’ Association in Oslo.
25.10.1968 - 28.10.1968 A nationwide all-party “Flag for Freedom” action in support of Czechoslovakia and in protest of the Soviet invasion. Schools are taking part in selling Czechoslovakian flag pins to support Czechoslovakian refugees.
28.10.1968 Demonstration outside the Soviet embassy in Oslo in protest against the Soviet invasion of Czechoslovakia. Demonstrations in Trondheim, Gjøvik and Eidsvoll. The demonstration is arranged by the all-party action “Flag for Freedom”.
08.11.1968 Harald Berntsen gives speech entitled ”Students’ and workers – common interests?” at a meeting in the Students’ Association in Bergen.
11.11.1968 The left radical student leader Sigurd Allern participates in a debate program (”Åpen post”) on television. Allern calls for an alliance between students and workers.
24.11.1968 Swastika painted on the wall of the U.S. embassy in Oslo.
25.11.1968 The police in Porsgrunn seize the underground newspaper Vibra. The editorial staff had sold the paper at high schools in the area. Vibra attacked the police conduct against demonstrators and the establishment in several articles .
December, 1968 The conservative student leader Halvor Stenstadvold is elected leader of the Student Union in Oslo for the spring term 1969. The alliance between socialists and the political center breaks down and the political center supported the conservatives. The socialist candidate, Sigurd Allern, looses.
10.12.1968 Demonstration outside the U.S. embassy in support of the American war in Vietnam. The Norwegian South East Asia Committee arranges the demonstration. Clashes between demonstrators and FNL supporters. The police restore order.
12.12.1968 Visit of representatives from the American company Dow Chemicals at the Technical University College in Trondheim is cancelled. The campaign to recruit Norwegian engineers fails after protest.
13.12.1968 - 15.12.1968 Philosophy seminar by associate professor Hans Skjervheim at Voss about the role of educational science in a larger perspective. Discussions about education in society and the government’s university reform committees (the Ottosen Committee and the Gjelsvik Commitee) and proposals about establishing regional colleges in Norway.
19.12.1968 Court trial in Oslo against program producer of NRK, Rosa Seierstad. She is accused of instigating an illegal demonstration outside the county jail on May 1 in support of an imprisoned demonstrator. Seierstad is fined by the court. Demonstrators are protesting the trial outside the court.
20.12.1968 Demonstration against the American war in Vietnam as part of the 8th anniversary of the establishment of FNL. The Vietnam Committee arranges the protest meeting at the Norwegian Labor Union’s Assembly Hall. A representative from FNL gives the main speech. Torbjørn Berntsen also gives speech. Several artists take part in the demonstration.

The Norwegian students protests starts

January, 1969 The Philosophy week at the University in Oslo. The so-called ”teach-in” initiated the Norwegian Student protests. The university and the students’ relation to society are in the center of the discussion. The discussion is met with criticism in the conservative press under the assumption that it is an occupation although the faculty staff had in fact provided room for the debate to avoid any confrontations.
06.01.1969 Demonstration outside the U.S. embassy against the American war in Vietnam during the visit of the American Vice President Hubert Humphrey. The protesters throw stones through the embassy windows. 
20.01.1969 Demonstration organized by the Vietnam Committee against the American war in Vietnam as part of an international protest at the time of president Nixon’s inaugural address.
27.01.1969 Court case against demonstrator arrested during the demonstration on July 4 1968. Trond Øgrim is fined and sentenced to 30 days imprisonment for breaking windows at the U.S. embassy.
February, 1969 The newspaper Klassekampen (the class struggle) is established in Oslo by the Norwegian Maoists.
09.02.1969 The Socialist People’s Party (SF) splits. Their youth organization SUF-ML, dominated by the Maoist fraction, breaks away from the party. The Red Front changes from a broad socialist alliance to a narrow extreme radical front.
27.02.1969 Demonstration in Oslo in protest against a South Vietnamese delegation visiting Norway.

02.12.1969 About 200,000 workers join a nation wide one-hour strike against the government’s economic policy. The political parties on the left attempt to establish a new political platform for a common interest in the organization of the Vietnam solidarity work in Norway, but fail.

08.04.1970 Students at the University of Bergen hold a walk-in at the faculty board meeting at the Faculty of Humanities in protest against the proposals of professor Knut Helle about study organization (these proposals were an adaptation of Ottosen Committee’s recommendations).

13.04.1970 - 19.04.1970 The Solidarity Committee for Vietnam holds nationwide Vietnam Week.

26.04.1970 Demonstration against the American film Green Berets in Elverum. Clashes between protestors and police. The police use teargas and batons and arrest 43 demonstrators. About 200 – 300 participate in demonstration and rally against Green Berets in Trondheim organized by local FNL-support groups. They force the movie theater director in Trondheim to take the film off the list of upcoming attractions.

05.05.1970 30 youths participate in actions against the U.S. embassy in Oslo in protest against the American invasion of Cambodia. The protestors throw stones through embassy windows. The police arrest several demonstrators.
07.05.1970 Rally in Oslo against the American war in Vietnam organized by the Vietnam Movement. A representative of the FNL participates.
08.05.1970 800 participants in an illegal demonstration outside the U.S. embassy in Oslo against the American invasion in Cambodia. Clashes between protestors and police. Two police officers are injured. The police arrest two demonstrators. 2,000 participants in a demonstration in Oslo organized by the Solidarity Committee for Vietnam. 700 participate in a demonstration in Oslo held by the Vietnam Movement. Demonstration in Oslo against Norwegian membership in NATO.
14.05.1970 1,000 participate in an illegal demonstration outside the U.S. embassy in Oslo in protest against the American war in Vietnam. Clashes between protestors and counter demonstrators.
21.05.1970 Demonstration and rally in Oslo against the American war in Vietnam held by the Vietnam Movement. The opening of a FNL information office in Oslo is announced.
02.06.1970 The workers at Electric Furnace Products Company Ltd. in Sauda start an illegal strike.

The Norwegian environmental protest starts

27.07.1970 The Mardøla environmental protest starts. The environmental activists set up a tent camp to stop the construction work.  
31.07.1970 Demonstration against the film Green Berets in Haugesund. The Norwegian government gives concession to start the development of the Mardøla river system. The environmentalists’ protest action against the development is already in motion. 
28.08.1970 The environmentalists’ protest action at Mardøla ends after a nonviolent confrontation with the police. The police remove the demonstrators from the construction area.
26.11.1970 About 500 – 1,500 participate in a demonstration outside the U.S. embassy in Oslo against the American bombing of North Vietnam. The Solidarity Committee for Vietnam organizes the demonstration with the support of several peace organizations and political youth parties.
20.12.1970 Demonstration in Oslo in support of FNL on FNL’s 10-year anniversary.

1971

02.03.1971 Prime Minister Per Borten resigns after having leaked confidential information from the EEC negotiations to the liberal newspaper Dagbladet.  
18.03.1971 Trygve Bratteli from the Labour Party (DNA) is appointed new prime minister. The new government announces its intension to recognize North Vietnam.
21.05.1971 Students of theology at the University of Oslo and at the MF Norwegian School of Theology participate in a demonstration outside the U.S.embassy against the American war in Vietnam.
07.06.1971 Several thousand participate in Oslo in a demonstration in protest against Norwegian membership in the EEC.
15.11.1971 The Norwegian government (as the first NATO country) recognizes North Vietnam.
24.09.1972 - 25.09.1972 Advisory referendum about Norwegian membership in the EEC. 53.5 % of the electorate vote no. The election turnout is 79.2 percent. The EEC question divdes the Norwegians throughout all parties. The “establishment” and business favor mostly favor the membership, while people in rural districts reject it.

01.02.1972 The Norwegian Language Council is established in Oslo.

1973

January, 1973 About 7,500 participate in a demonstration in Oslo against the American war in Vietnam. This is the largest Norwegian demonstration against the American war in Vietnam ever. The chairman of the Labor Union, Tor Aspengren, gives the main speech at the rally.
18.02.1973 The Workers Communist Party – Marxist Leninist (AKP-ML) is established.
16.10.1973 Henry Kissinger and Le Duc Tho are announced as winners of the Nobel Peace Prize for their contributions to the peace agreement to end the war in Vietnam. The award and choice are very controversial.

1974

30.08.1974 Gro Harlem Brundtland is appointed as Minister of Environment.

1975

14.03.1975 The government proposes an Equal Rights Act in Parliament.
29.05.1975 Parliament passes a new abortion law that enables women to have an abortion up until the 12th week. The bishop Per Lønning in the Norwegian State Church resigns in protest against the new law.

1976

26.04.1976 The Norwegian School of Theology allows women to enter their practical theology studies.
