1960

21.10.1960 - 23.10.1960 About 5,000 people participate in the first peace march in Denmark in protest against nuclear weapons both in East and West. The march goes from Holbæk to Roskilde the first day. The second day to Tune and on the third day to the City Hall Square in Copenhagen. The demonstrators demand ban against nuclear weapons on Danish soil, credible information about the consequences of radioactive fallout, that the Danish Government should in its policy make sure that Denmark does not become a bomb target, and the Government’s active promotion for an international ban on the use of nuclear weapons. The marches receive little attention in media. Few newspapers write about them and TV media shows no footage.

1961

April, 1961 2,000 people participate in a three days long Easter march from Holbæk to City Hall Square in Copenhagen. A protest meeting takes place at the Tivoli Concert Hall. Minister of Church Affairs, Social Democrat Bodil Koch, gives a speech. Thanks to special spectacles during the march, like a snow storm and a couple that gets married, the demonstration attracts attention from media.

1962

01.03.1962 - 01.04.1962 25,000 people participates in the Easter march and in the rally outside the City Hall in Copenhagen in protest against nuclear weapons.

1963

01.03.1963 - 01.04.1963 Easter march against nuclear weapons in Copenhagen. This was the last Easter march in Denmark before 1968.

1964

05.08.1964 Demonstration against the American War in Vietnam outside the American Embassy in Copenhagen after the clashes in the Tonkin bay between American and North Vietnamese naval forces. The demonstrators use slogans as: ”USA out of Vietnam” and ”Hands off Vietnam”. The demonstration is arranged by the youth organization of the Danish Communist Party (DKU), the Socialist Peoples Party’s youth organization (SUF), The Trotskyite organization Socialist Action (SOAK), and the Marxist Forum (Maoist). It is the political left wing, especially the Danish Communist Party (DKP) and its newspaper ”Land og Folk” [Country and People], that proclaims the mobilization against the escalating war in Vietnam.

1966

01.01.1966 - 31.01.1966 The Danish Vietnam Committee is established. The Communist Workers Establishment (Kommunistisk Arbejdskreds), under the leadership of Gottfred Appel, initiates the establishment.
14.03.1966 Demonstration against a NATO exercise in Denmark.
01.07.1966 Demonstration in Copenhagen against the American War in Vietnam and the bombing of Hanoi.
03.07.1966 Demonstration in Copenhagen against the proposed value added tax.

1967

21.04.1967 Demonstra­tion outside the Royal Castle Amalienborg in Copenhagen. More than 600 demonstrators march in protest against the military coup in Greece. Clashes between demonstrators and the police.
14.05.1967 Two demonstrations in Copenhagen. One pro-American demonstration in support of the American war in Vietnam, and one anti-American demonstration against the support of the war.
21.10.1967 Extensive demonstration in Copenhagen against the American War in Vietnam. 15,000 demonstrators clash with the police outside the American embassy. The demonstrators throw stones and Molotov-cocktails against the windows.
25.10.1967 Danish Youth organizations offer American deserters asylum.
18.11.1967 - 01.12.1967 The second Russel Tribunal meets in Roskilde. The international war crimes tribunal examines alleged American war crimes in Vietnam. The first meeting is held in Stockholm
17.12.1967 6 left wing members of the Socialist Peoples Party (Sosialistisk Folkeparti) announce that they would form a new party on the political left of SF. The six left wingers vote to bring down the Social Democratic Government of Premier minister Jens Otto Krag.

1968

01.01.1968 - 31.01.1968 The Conscientious Objectors Information Office under the leadership of Ove Buntzen Larsen establishes the Group 31.  The group’s objective is to inform about the possibility to serve general conscription as a conscientious objector under the paragraph 31-CF in the Danish general conscription Law.
21.01.1968 An American B-52 bomb plane carrying hydrogen nuclear bombs crashes in the ice at Thule, Greenland. One crewmember gets killed and some of the bombs are lost.
22.01.1968 About 150 demonstrators protest outside the American Embassy after an American B-52 carrying hydrogen bombs crashed off Greenland.
23.01.1968 The Social Democratic party is defeated in a huge protest vote in the General Election. The party had been in power for the last 15 years. Among the new elected Parliament members is the radical pacifist Meta Ditzel.
25.01.1968 An official Danish investigating committee goes to Thule to take part in the clean-up operation after the B-52 plane crash.
01.02.1968 Hilmar Baunsgaard, leader of the Radical Liberal party, is appointed new Danish Premier minister after the election
28.02.1968 The Minister of Justice answers questions in Parliament about whether American deserters would get residence and work permit in Denmark or not. He answers that it would be ”an assessment in each individual case”.
29.02.1968 The Greek regime recalls its ambassador to Sweden and charges Sweden as well as Denmark with having made interventions in Greece's domestic affairs.

The student upraising starts in Denmark

21.03.1968 Several student demonstrations in Copenhagen. During the night students write slogans on a wall at the university in Copenhagen: ”Break the power of the professors!” and ”Participation now!”  The students demand participation in their own education, and a 50/50 percent participation of students and teachers in all university study committees. The protest initiates the 1968 student revolt in Denmark
28.03.1968 75 participate in a demonstration outside the American embassy in Copenhagen in protest against the American War in Vietnam. The demonstration is arranged by the organization AmK
01.04.1968 Eastern march in Copenhagen in protest against nuclear weapons.
10.04.1968 3000 schoolchildren participate in a protest outside the Parliament against the Minister of Education. They throw tomatoes, apple core and toilet paper against the walls in protest of removing youths’ free railroad tickets.
19.04.1968 - 26.04.1968 150 students at the Faculty of Psychology at the university in Copenhagen occupy the Faculty laboratory at “Studiegården”. The occupation lasts until April 26 when the university gave in to the students’ demands. The laboratory is not damaged.
20.04.1968 50 psychology students barricade classrooms and teachers’ offices at the university in Copenhagen and demand to have more to say in university affairs.
21.04.1968 100 participate in a demonstration against the American war in Vietnam outside the American Embassy. Baton-handling police officers evict the protestors. 5 demonstrators are arrested.
23.04.1968 5 000 students participate in a demonstration in Copenhagen.
26.04.1968 Student action for salary during studies. Students seek out Social Security Offices and apply for public assistance.
27.04.1968 About 25 000 participate in a demonstration in the streets of Copenhagen to the American Embassy in protest against the American War in Vietnam. It was the largest Vietnam demonstration in Denmark ever. The protestors are shouting slogans as: “Denmark out of NATO!”, “Break with Saigon!”, “Fight the American imperialism!”, “USA out of Vietnam!”, and “Recognize FNL and North Vietnam!” Most of the march is peaceful, but resulted in violent clashes with 6 – 700 police officers. Several, both demonstrators and police officers, are injured in the fights and 50 are arrested. The Vietnam Committees in Greater Copenhagen (DSVK) organizes the demonstration.
31.05.1968 The Danish Foreign Ministry guarantees Denmark’s nuclear policy on Greenland that bans over flying and storage of nuclear weapons. Through negotiations with American authorities the United States agrees to this policy according to the Defense agreement from 1951.
02.06.1968 - 03.06.1968 More than 1 000 participate in a demonstration march from Hillerød to the American Embassy in Copenhagen in protest against the American war in Vietnam.
28.06.1968 Anti-military action against plans to build new military barracks in Skive.
July, 1968 Danish, Swedish and Norwegian students take part in an International student summer camp in Cuba. The Cuban Government pays most of the expenses. According to media they also learn about urban guerrilla warfare.
20.07.1968 The Greek Government threatens to break off the diplomatic relations with Denmark after an attack on one Greek diplomat in the streets of Copenhagen.
15.09.1968 The Communist Association of Marxist-Leninist (KFML) is established in Copenhagen.
30.09.1968 The government declaration about the surveillance by the Secret Police is presented by the Minister of Justice Knud Thestrup: ” Surveillance of Danish citizens will longer be implemented on basis of legal political activities”. The statement is not implemented into laws
21.11.1968 Student disturbance during the annual celebration at the university in Copenhagen. The guests are the Danish establishment, with the King and Queen, and the Successor in front. The students are not included on the guest list. By forging admission passes, some students manage to enter the assembly rooms and deliver a speech from the platform with harsh attacks on the class society and such an event as the annual celebration reserved for the establishment. After the speech the activists leave the assembly rooms without any further disturbance. Due to the fact that there were many journalists present, the action received large media coverage in newspapers, radio and television.
27.11.1968 Anti-Greek demonstration during a football match in Copenhagen between teams from Denmark and Greece.
07.12.1968 The Danish Vietnam Committees splits in two different organizations. The majority is organized in the anti-imperialist oriented organization of The Danish Vietnam Committees (DDV) and the minority in the organization Vietnam 69. Vietnam 69 is dominated by the Danish Communist Party and several people from the Labor Union.

1969

03.02.1969 Conscientious objectors on hunger strike at the camp in Kompedal.
12.02.1969 The hunger strike in Kompedal spreads to all three camps for conscientious objectors in Denmark. The Minister of Justice, Poul Sørenensen, informs the Parliament about the conditions for conscientious objectors in Denmark.
20.03.1969 The youth organization Never War Again in Roskilde shows the documentary film Sons and Daughters (on Day of Protest) about the Vietnam movement in the United States.
06.05.1969 Demonstrations in Copenhagen in protest against the American film Green Devils.Violent clashes between demonstrators and right wing activists “the Wild Angles” (de vilde engler).
01.07.1969 Denmark legalizes as the first country sale of pornography. During the install ceremony of the new bishop in Copenhagen members of the organization Never War Again were removed with force by the police for disturbance. A Non-party Common Action for Neutrality is established. The organization aims at Danish neutrality and withdrawal from Danish NATO membership.
05.07.1969 50 participate in a demonstration against the American War in Vietnam during the visit of former Vice President Hubert H. Humphrey in Denmark. A smoke bomb is thrown and 8 demonstrators are arrested.

01.10.1969 The Women’s International League for Peace and Liberty changes name to the International League for Peace and Liberty.
16.10.1969 American students abroad participate in demonstration march through Copenhagen in protest against the American War in Vietnam. The march is a part of a campaign in several European capitals in support of Vietnam Moratorium Day
22.10.1969 An intelligence service wiretap central in central Copenhagen is exposed.
05.11.1969 Danish counterespionage authorities confiscate two left-wing periodicals, the Vietnam Solidaritet and Politisk Revy. The police arrest seven young activists and charge two leading editors of a Copenhagen newspaper, Information, for having published secret military information
28.11.1969 The Committee for helping American deserters applies for membership in the Danish Refugee Help organization.
12.12.1969 The Danish environment organization NOAH is established.

1970

03.03.1970 Student demonstration at the University in Copenhagen in protest against the new university law, proposed by Minister of Education Helge Larsen (”Evil Helge”). The law was very liberal and gives the students more to say. The professors got reduced control within the university. The controversy was about the rules for representation and numbers of students in the central decision bodies at the University. The students occupy rector Mogens Fog’s office.
08.04.1970 A feminist (“rødstrømper”) demonstration in “Strøget”, Copenhagen, in protest against fashion industry and against sexist gender ideals.
14.06.1970 45 Jordanian demonstrators occupy the Jordanian Embassy in Copenhagen in protest against the Jordanian Government’s dealings with the PLO in Jordan.
20.09.1970 - 25.09.1970 5 days of demonstrations during the meeting of the World Bank Congress in Copenhagen. The police use rough methods against the protestors. The under-officer school of the Danish Air Force is mobilized in connection with the demonstrations.
27.11.1970 The Danish Vietnam Committees arranges its 3rd ordinary national congress.

1971

27.01.1971 Student demonstration at the university of Aarhus against Helge Larsen’s university law.
01.02.1971 - 28.02.1971 Several student demonstrations at the university in Aarhus take place against the administration. The police disperse the demonstrators.
